The answer is: it depends on the person. We all know that flossing is important for your dental hygiene. But it can also be pretty hard to do, especially reaching the teeth in the back! Fortunately, there are helpful tools called “floss holders” that do almost exactly what you would expect. Your dentist may even recommend one to you if you have difficulty with flossing.
There are two main types of floss holders: reusable and disposable. Both have their pros and cons, and the one you choose largely depends on your own situation. Reusable holders last longer and also produce less waste. However, you will need to have separate floss for a reusable holder, while disposable holders tend to come with their own floss pre-prepared.
Most floss holders are simple to use and will have instructions readily available. That said, reusable types tend to work similarly. You take a long string of floss and wrap it tightly around the holder, so that there is a usable portion of floss stretched taut across the top. As mentioned above, disposable floss holders usually come with floss pre-prepared, so you will not have to do anything like that.
When the floss is prepared, you use the floss holder to floss between your teeth. It’s important to adjust which part of the floss you are using, just like if you were flossing normally. After all, you don’t want to use dirty floss to clean between your teeth! Disposable ones are a little simpler, as you can either pull out a new holder or rinse off the one you’re using.
Of course, as always you should speak to your dentist and make sure that you’re doing what is best for your own dental health and hygiene. Everyone’s situation is different—however, floss holders are still very useful for people with difficulty flossing all their teeth. Keeping up with your daily oral hygiene is incredibly important for your dental health and, for the most part, anything that makes that easier to accomplish is a good step to take.
